Collection: Outdoor Drains

Outdoor drains take a lot more punishment than their indoor counterparts. They deal with UV exposure, rain, poolside chemicals, leaf debris, and in coastal areas, constant salt air. The drains on this page are fabricated from 316L marine grade stainless steel or solid brass — materials chosen specifically because they hold up in those conditions without rusting, pitting, or perishing.

All drains are manufactured to order from our workshop in Caringbah, Sydney. Standard lengths start from 200mm and we can fabricate single-piece runs up to 3640mm. If your project needs something outside these sizes or a specific outlet position, visit our custom drain quote form.

Where outdoor strip drains are used

Pool surrounds and pool decks: The most common outdoor drain application. Strip drains installed along the pool coping edge or pool deck perimeter capture splash water and rain before it spreads across the surrounding surface. A linear drain requires only a single gradient fall toward the channel, which simplifies the paving layout and keeps the finished surface level and consistent. Wedge wire is the most popular finish for pool surrounds; tile insert suits pools where the paving runs continuously across the pool coping for a seamless finish. For more on specifying pool drainage, read our pool drainage guide.

Balconies and outdoor entertaining areas: Water that has nowhere to drain on a balcony or paved outdoor area will find its way under tiles, into substrate, and eventually into the structure below. A strip drain installed at the lowest point of the surface with a 1 to 2 percent fall removes water before it can cause problems. Both wedge wire and tile insert finishes work well in outdoor entertaining areas depending on the paving type.

Courtyards and patios: Enclosed or semi-enclosed outdoor areas are particularly prone to water pooling because they often lack natural fall toward a garden edge. A linear strip drain across the threshold or at the low point of the paving keeps the surface dry and safe underfoot after rain.

Driveways and garage thresholds: For driveway applications, see our driveway drain collection, which includes drains rated to the correct load class for vehicle traffic.

Wedge wire or tile insert?

Wedge wire drains have a stainless steel bar grate with consistent slots between the bars. They are straightforward to clean, handle high water flow, and suit outdoor applications where a visible stainless finish looks right. This is the standard choice for pool surrounds, courtyards, and outdoor entertaining areas.

Tile insert drains have a recessed tray into which a cut tile or paver sits flush with the surrounding surface. The drain becomes nearly invisible, which suits pools and balconies where the paving extends continuously and the design intent is a seamless floor. The tile insert must be matched and cut to the surrounding paving during installation.

Why 316L stainless steel matters outdoors

Most off-the-shelf outdoor drains are made from 304 grade stainless steel or plastic with a stainless appearance. In pool environments, coastal areas, or anywhere with prolonged moisture exposure, these materials corrode. 316L marine grade stainless steel has a lower carbon content and a different alloy composition that gives it significantly better resistance to corrosion at the weld points, which is where lower grade steel fails first. All Strip Drains products use 316L throughout, with no plastic fittings in any component.
