Class B driveway drain custom made for pasenger vehicles and light trucks.

What Load Class Do I Need for My Driveway Drain Grate?

Choosing the wrong load class for a driveway drain grate is one of those mistakes that only shows up after something goes wrong. A grate that can't handle the weight will flex, crack, or shift, and in a driveway, that's a safety issue as much as it is a product failure. Today we'll walk through what load classes mean, which one applies to your driveway, and how to get the spec right before you order.

What Is a Load Class?

Load class refers to the maximum weight a drainage grate can safely handle without deforming or failing. In Australia, drainage grates are classified according to AS 3996, the Australian Standard for access covers, grates, and frames. This standard defines six load classes, each rated for a different application and vehicle type.

If a product doesn't reference AS 3996, treat that as a red flag. It means there's no verified load rating behind the spec.

The Load Classes Explained

Class A: Pedestrian and Domestic Foot Traffic Only

Class A grates are rated for foot traffic and very light loads. Think garden paths, indoor floor drains, and areas where no vehicle access is possible. They are not suitable for driveways under any circumstances.

Class B: Residential Driveways and Light Vehicles

Class B is the standard for most residential driveways. It covers passenger vehicles, SUVs, and light vans, rated to a maximum axle load of around 12.5 tonnes. If your driveway is used exclusively by the family car, a small delivery van, or a tradie's ute, Class B is the minimum you need for your driveway drain.

It's worth noting that Class B is a minimum for residential driveways, not a maximum. Specifying Class C in a residential setting is not overkill if heavier vehicles occasionally access the property.

Class C: Heavier Vehicle Access

Class C is rated for heavier loads, up to approximately 25 tonnes axle load. This makes it appropriate for residential driveways that need to accommodate concrete trucks, skip bins, or removalist vehicles on a regular basis, as well as commercial car parks and light industrial access areas.

If you're building a new home and you know a concrete truck will be rolling over the driveway during construction, Class C is the safer call.

Class D: Commercial and Industrial Driveways

Class D covers heavy commercial traffic, including delivery trucks and rigid-body vehicles. If the site is a commercial property, a loading dock, a warehouse, or a business that receives regular heavy vehicle deliveries, Class D is the appropriate standard.

Specifying below Class D in these environments isn't just a product issue, it's a liability issue.

Class E and Class F: Extreme Load Applications

Classes E and F are for specialised applications such as airport aprons, port facilities, and heavy haul routes. These are uncommon in standard residential or commercial driveway projects and require engineering sign-off.

How to Choose the Right Load Class for Your Driveway

Start by asking two questions: what is the heaviest vehicle that will regularly use this driveway, and what is the heaviest vehicle that could ever access it, even occasionally?

The load class should cover the maximum possible load, not just the typical use case. A drain grate rated for a passenger vehicle that gets driven over by a concrete truck once during construction can fail permanently from that single event.

For most residential driveways, Class B is the minimum and Class C is a sensible upgrade. For commercial driveways, Class D is the starting point.

Does Grate Material Affect Load Rating?

Yes. The material and construction of the grate both contribute to how well it holds up under load over time. Stainless steel grates maintain their structural integrity far better than polymer or coated mild steel alternatives, particularly in outdoor conditions with UV exposure, water ingress, and temperature cycling.

A stainless steel grate rated to Class C will continue to perform at that rating over its lifetime. A cheaper alternative may meet the rated load when new but degrade faster under the same conditions.
