The Project
Sylvania Waters is one of Sydney's more demanding addresses for a builder to work in. The suburb sits on the Georges River system, waterfront homes, high architectural expectations, and owners who care about every detail, right down to the drain in the driveway.

This project is a new build at Castlereagh Crescent, Sylvania Waters, designed by Sam Crawford Architects, a Newtown-based practice with a strong portfolio in high-quality residential architecture across Sydney. Construction was managed by Corrion Prestige Developments, a prestige builder based in Caringbah.
Strip Drains was specified to supply the driveway drain for the entry, a Class B stainless steel heel guard strip drain, custom fabricated to suit the site.
Why a Heel Guard Grate?
The driveway finish is high-quality stone paving. A standard residential drain grate would have been out of place, both visually and functionally. The architect and builder needed a drain that could handle vehicle crossings, sit flush with the finished surface, and hold its own aesthetically against a prestige build.
A heel guard strip drain ticks all three boxes.
The heel guard grate pattern features a tight, close-set aperture, practical in a driveway context where fine debris, gravel, and footwear all need to be accounted for. The non-slip surface is also relevant in a setting where people are stepping out of vehicles onto a potentially wet surface.
Class B Load Rating
This drain is specified to Class B, which means it's rated for light vehicular traffic, the appropriate rating for a residential driveway where passenger vehicles will cross the drain regularly.
The shouldered design is key here. The drain body sits within the surrounding surface with no exposed edges or lips. There's no movement under load, no chipping over time, and no gap for the paved surround to settle unevenly against. It's a clean, resolved installation that will hold up for years without maintenance issues.
Stainless Steel for a Waterfront Location
Sylvania Waters is a waterfront suburb. Salt air is a real consideration for any external metalwork, and it's one of the reasons stainless steel is the right specification for a driveway drain in this environment.
Our heel guard grates are manufactured from 316L marine-grade stainless steel, the same grade used in coastal and marine applications. It resists corrosion and surface staining without any special treatment or ongoing maintenance. The finish holds in the salt air where powder-coated alternatives would eventually break down.
The Result
The drain sits flush in the tile-paved driveway at the entry to the residence. It's there to do a job, handle water runoff, take the load of vehicle traffic, look right in a high-end setting, and it does all three without drawing attention to itself. That's exactly what a well-specified drain should do.
For a project of this calibre, the drain was never going to be an afterthought. Getting it right was part of getting the whole entry right.
