A drain grate is the visible cover that sits on top of a drainage channel. It's the part you can see from above, the steel grid, slot pattern or tile insert that covers the channel body beneath.
In everyday conversation, 'drain grate' often refers to the complete drain assembly (channel body plus grate cover), not just the cover alone. When someone searches for drain grates in Sydney, they're almost always looking for a complete linear drain unit, not just a replacement grate.
Drain grates come in two main styles:
- Wedge wire grates: precision-formed stainless steel bars with uniform slots between them. This is what most people picture when they think of a steel grate drain.
- Tile insert grates: a recessed tray that holds a cut tile flush with the surrounding floor, making the drain nearly invisible.
What Is a Strip Drain?
A strip drain is a complete linear drainage system, the channel body, the outlet connection and the grate cover. Strip drains are designed to run along a wall, threshold or floor edge and capture water across their full length, rather than directing it to a single central point like a traditional floor waste.
The name 'strip drain' comes from the elongated, strip-like shape of the drain. You'll also hear them called linear drains, channel drains or trench drains, all of these refer to essentially the same type of product.
At Strip Drains Sydney, our products are strip drains with either a wedge wire grate top or a tile insert top, fabricated from marine grade 316L stainless steel, or Premium 2mm Brass.
So Are Drain Grates and Strip Drains the Same Thing?
Technically, a drain grate is one component of a strip drain. But in practice, when people say 'drain grates Sydney' or 'floor drain grates', they typically mean the whole drain unit, channel and grate together.
Think of it like buying a window, you don't just order the glass, you're ordering the frame, glass and hardware as a complete assembly. The same applies here.
The takeaway: if you're looking for drain grates for a bathroom, pool or balcony, what you want is a strip drain (also called a linear drain) with a grate-style or tile insert top.
Wedge Wire Drain Grates vs Tile Insert Drain Grates
This is the choice that matters most for your project. Both grate styles are available across our Sydney-made strip drain range, so it comes down to aesthetics and application.
Wedge Wire Grate
The wedge wire grate is the classic stainless steel strip drain look -- horizontal or vertical stainless bars with consistent slots between them. It's straightforward, durable and easy to clean.
Best suited to: pool surrounds and coping areas, outdoor entertaining and driveway applications, commercial wet areas, any project where a clean stainless steel finish is the goal.
Tile Insert Grate
The tile insert grate is designed to disappear into the floor. A secondary tray inside the drain holds a cut tile that matches the surrounding floor finish, leaving only a shadow line where the drain sits.
Best suited to: bathrooms and ensuite showers, large-format tile layouts, high-end residential and hospitality interiors, anywhere the design intent is a seamless floor plane.
Does the Material Matter?
Yes, significantly. Most off-the-shelf drain grates are made from 304 grade stainless steel or, in cheaper products, from plastic with a stainless finish applied. These options can work in low-moisture, low-traffic indoor settings, but they're not well suited to pool environments, coastal locations or outdoor exposure.
All Strip Drains products are fabricated from 316L marine grade stainless steel. The 'L' designation indicates a lower carbon content, which improves corrosion resistance and weld integrity. This makes our drain grates genuinely suited to pool areas, outdoor installations and coastal properties where salt air and moisture are a constant.
There are no plastic fittings used in any of our drain grate products. Every component, channel, grate, outlet, end caps, is metal.
What About Custom Sizing?
Off-the-shelf drain grates typically come in standard lengths: 600mm, 900mm, 1200mm. If your project has an unusual floor plan, a threshold that doesn't match a standard size, or a specific outlet position required by your plumber, standard products often don't cut it.
Our Sydney workshop fabricates drain grates to custom lengths and outlet positions. This means your drain grate can be built to exactly fit your bathroom, pool coping or balcony threshold, not the other way around.

We also offer powder coating, so drain grates can be finished in matte black, bronze or other architectural colours if you want the drain to complement the surrounding fixtures rather than stand out.
